England's WAGs Get Red Card

July 9, 2006

England's new manager Steve McLaren has banned WAGs, players' wives and girlfriends, from future tournaments, according to the British press on Sunday. McLaren, who took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson after England exited in the quarter-finals, has decided that the women's power shopping and late night partying make them too much of a distraction.

A source close to the Football Association told the Sunday Telegraph: "The WAGs provided a lot of entertainment with their designer clothes, fake tans, hair extensions and heavy drinking in the bars." But McLaren was reputedly not impressed. "Steve seems to think that it was all a bit over the top and could affect the way the team performs," the paper wrote.

The WAGs entourage included David Beckham's wife and former popstar Victoria, Wayne Rooney's girlfriend Colleen McLoughlin, Joe Cole's girlfriend Carly Zucker, Frank Lampard's fiancee Elen Rives, and Ashley Cole's partner and pop singer Cheryl Tweedy.

Although Victoria and co, may have left Germany and its designer shops, at least three British WAGs have made it to the final. When Italy play France in Berlin on Sunday, Claire Henry -- better known as the English model Nicole Merry -- will cheer on her husband Thierry Henry. Teammate Patrick Vieira's English wife, Cheryl, will also be in the stadium. And on the opposite side is Monica Romano, born in Glasgow and now married to Italian midfielder Rino Gattuso.
