Ethiopia election 2026

June 1, 2026

Polls opened on Monday with the ruling party of incumbent Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expected to win. Observers are concerned over a fractured opposition, with the country facing internal conflicts and ethnic divisions.

A election official, dressed in a purple bib, explains voting procedures to an elderly female voter at a polling station in Addis Ababa. They are standing over a table filled with blue and white ballots. In the background, just outside the voting tent, the Ethiopian flag is visible.
