Ethiopians headed to the polls on Monday to vote in parliamentary elections. Conflicts in the Tigray, Oromia and Amhara regions meant not everyone was able to cast their ballot.

Voters in Ethiopia lined up at the ballot box from early Monday morning in the capital Addis Ababa to elect more than 500 members of parliament, who will later choose the prime minister.

While many citizens saw the election as a chance to shape the country's future, only a fraction of the population was registered to vote. Voting did not take place in conflict-affected regions such as Tigray, and opposition parties alleged their had been restrictions on campaigning.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected to remain in power.
