Ethiopia heads to its seventh elections since 1990. The poll is not expected to deliver a shock, with many voices likely to go unheard.

Ethiopians vote on June 1 to elect 547 parliamentary representatives, with the ruling Prosperity Party, holding 457 seats since 2021, expected to dominate a largely uncompetitive race.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presents the poll as a sign of stability, but analysts cite concerns: ongoing conflicts in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia that may limit voting; persistent electoral flaws that previously left millions unrepresented; and weak, fragmented opposition parties.

Economic strain and rising public frustration further challenge the election’s credibility and inclusiveness.
