Anja Kueppers-McKinnon interviewed EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen
December 3, 2025

The European Union has agreed to phase out all imports of Russian gas by autumn 2027. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen explains why it's taken so long to make the decision.

The European Union has agreed to phase out all Russian gas imports by 2027. Dan Jorgensen, the EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, told DW the deal was achieved through "unprecedented" trade legislation that, unlike sanctions, did not require unanimous approval — thus circumventing veto threats from Hungary and Slovakia. Both countries have vowed to challenge the law before the EU Court of Justice.

Jorgenson emphasized that "it's important that we stand side-by-side in our defense of Ukraine and in our opposition to Russia." Continuing to buy Russian gas, he said, was "100% unacceptable" since it meant "indirectly helping to finance Putin's war."  EU members still spend more than €1 billion per month on Russian energy supplies, mainly gas.
