In an exclusive DW interview, David McAllister, chair of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee, has called on the US to "come back to where we were before," rather than escalate a row over trade further.

Possible EU countermeasures directed at the US, McAllister said, could include freezing the US-EU trade deal, new tariffs and the so-called "trade bazooka," or the anti-coercion Instrument (ACI).

While the biggest political group in the European Parliament now supports a tougher stance on Donald Trump, the EPP are hesitant to take steps that could alienate the US president further.
