Both the European Union and Mexico are aiming to reduce their dependence on the United States and partially avoid US President Donald Trump's import tariffs, DW's Rosie Birchard reports from Brussels.

Mexico's World Cup preparations are coinciding with a push to deepen ties with the European Union, as Brussels seeks a new trade deal to boost exports and reduce reliance on global powers such as the US.

The pact highlights geopolitical ambitions as much as economic ones. Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, is balancing engagement with the European Union engagement with sensitive relations with her country's northern neighbor.
