The elite militia reports directly to Iran's supreme leader and is widely seen as a key force in propping up the regime. The terror designation is driven by the group’s activities within the European Union, DW reports.

The European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, says the bloc is considering designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization following the killing of thousands of anti-government protesters in early January.
