EU struggles to agree climate targets before COP summit

The European Union's governments are trying to define the bloc's climate targets ahead of this month's COP conference in Brazil, but there's been widespread disagreement amongst the EU's 27 member countries.

EU countries are divided over how to meet emissions targets ahead of the UN climate summit in Brazil.

Germany and Italy fear that phasing out combustion engines will harm their automobile industries, while Eastern states argue that their energy systems can't adapt quickly enough.

The European Union aims for climate neutrality by 2050, but internal disputes over 2035 goals and carbon offsetting threaten its global credibility.
