Amsterdam gets its name from the Amstel River and was founded as a fishing village.

The Netherlands' biggest city Amsterdam is famous for its canals and tourists are drawn by its waterfront charm, architecture and top museums. Amsterdam, which was once Europe's richest city owing to its shipping and trade, also boasts a young designer scene and lively nightlife.
