November 9, 2014 Iconic Images
For the generation who lived through it, the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago was the defining experience of their lives. A number of images from the time have become world famous - from the photo of a Trabant full of young women to the crowds of people who climbed onto the wall, and the Brandenburg Gate lit up by the flashbulbs of thousands of reporters.
Border of Lights
An installation featuring 8000 illuminated balloons, devised by artist Christopher Bauder, will mark the former route of the Berlin Wall through the city center between November 7-9. On Sunday night, they'll be released into the skies above the German capital.
Follet’s World
We meet up with bestselling author Ken Follett, whose latest novel "Edge of Eternity" is the third and last part of "The Century Trilogy”, which follows the fortunes of five intertwined families as they make their way through the 20th century. Needless to say, communist East Germany and the Berlin Wall play a significant role in the plot.
Post-Wall Paths
The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, turned many peoples' lives inside-out. Gallery-owner Gerd Harry Lybke, actress and singer Jeanette Biedermann and musician Klaus Meine all say they would never have ended up pursuing the careers they did, had Berlin's division remained.
