This year Germany's former industrial heartland, the Ruhr region, is the European capital of Culture along with Istanbul and the Hungarain city of Petsch. An official opening ceremony was held in the Rurhr city of Essen on Saturday. Over the next 12 months Essen will share the spotlight with dozens of other towns in the Ruhr region.
