European Parliament passes new migration law - je 18.06.2008 18

European Union lawmakers have agreed to toughen the guide lines for imprisoning illegal immigrants. Under the new rules, undocumented workers can be imprisoned for up to 18 months and face a re-entry ban of up to five years. Lawmakers in the European Parliament backed the new migration law by a large majority today - confirming an earlier deal by EU Interior Ministers. According to immigration officials - of the about 10 million illegal immigrants in the Union - some 200-thousand were arrested this year and 90,000 were expelled.
