Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration Rasmus Stoklund told DW he envisions a new system that helps people in the Third World, close to the conflicts and hardships that prompt people to seek asylum in Europe.

Denmark is known for having one of the strictest migration policies in Europe, with lower per capita asylum numbers than its European neighbours.

After meeting with his German counterpart, Alexander Dobrindt, in Berlin, Denmark's new Minister of Immigration and Integration, Rasmus Stoklund, told Deutsche Welle that he believes "the European asylum system is broken."

He pointed to the issue of human smugglers who, by being paid large sums by migrants and refugees, essentially determine who gains access to Europe. "That is why we want to establish a new system where we can help a lot more people, but help them in the Third World and help them close to the conflicts..."
