Ex-Secret Service Worker Charged with Espionage

February 17, 2004

Germany's Attorney General has charged a long-time Federal Intelligence Agency (BND) employee with spying. Ingo S. (his full name was not released), 64, is accused of passing information to an Eastern European intelligence service from July 2002 to September 2003. The man, who has already issued a confession, was arrested in Munich in October and has been out on bail since December. He had worked as an Eastern European specialist at the BND until late 2001, when he was assigned different duties. Then he began to meet with a woman who worked for an Eastern European country's secret service. Sources in intelligence circles have said the Bulgarian intelligence service is the agency in question. Spies face up to five years in jail in Germany. Those found guilty of particularly grave breaches face up to ten years of prison.
