South of Munich, in beautiful Upper Bavaria, the legendary and quirky King Ludwig ll had many castles built which still adorn the landscape today.

One of them is the Herrenchiemsee Palace, also known as the New Palace, located on an island in the middle of Chiemsee, Bavaria's largest lake.

Built in neo-Baroque style in the second half of the 19th century, the palace was inspired by Versailles and reveals King Ludwig's admiration for King Louis XIV of France.

Click on the video link below to join long-time caretaker Werner Koch on a tour of the palace grounds. He shows his three favorite spots around Chiemsee, including a lookout on the bike trail around the lake, an old fashioned nursery run by a Bavarian family and a cafe in the mountains.
