Munich's Oktoberfest has been attracting large numbers of visitors for over 200 years. It has been copied all over the world - we take a short beer trip around the globe.
The world's second largest Oktoberfest
The Chinese city of Qingdao has been staging its own Oktoberfest for 25 years, and tries to make it as authentic as possible. Just like in Munich, you'll find a blue and white tent with long tables and draught beer. Asia's largest beer bash attracts some four million people every year.
Chopsticks and beer
Take a closer look and you’ll see that Chinese revelers do eat sauerkraut and pretzel, but they also enjoy their own traditional food like octopus on skewers.
The South American way
Oktoberfest in Blumenau, Brazil is the second largest open air party on the continent, following Rio’s carnival. Over one million people attend every year. Blumenau was founded by German migrants in 1850 and its half-timbered houses provide a fitting backdrop for Oktoberfest.
Bavaria meets the Wild West
Helen, Georgia has been celebrating Oktoberfest for 45 years. In the late 1960s the town was facing extinction until its residents turned it into a replica of a German Alpine village. Now it is a huge tourist magnet.
A cool beer in Central Park
Oktoberfest in New York consists of different tents and beer gardens scattered around the city like here in Central Park. Every year there is also the traditional Steuben Parade - a procession down Fifth Avenue, which aims to preserve the culture of its ethnic German inhabitants.
Barking mad in Victoria
Melbourne, Australia celebrates Oktoberfest with live music, cool beer and a dachshund race! The dogs are dressed up as hot dogs with either ketchup or mustard.
Oktoberfest in the sun
The Spanish island of Majorca, very popular with German tourists, also has its own Oktoberfest. The town of Paguera has a traditional opening parade with horse-drawn carriages and the famous keg ceremony.
Friends and neighbors
Austria also celebrates Oktoberfest in the capital Vienna. But this version has its own traditions and is opened by Emperor Franz and Empress Sissi impersonators.
