While newborns need to sleep for an average of 16 hours per day, 70-year-olds get by just fine on about 6 hours. Women generally need more sleep than men, and people tend to sleep longer in the winter than in summer. Based on the average life expectancy, a person sleeps for 25 years during their lifetime.
