The Courage to Protest

Both Helmut Frenz and Axel Becker left Germany to serve as Lutheran pastors in Chile. Their protests against the brutality of General Augusto Pinochet’s regime during the 1970s led to a split in the Lutheran Church in Chile that has not been healed to this day.  Bishop Frenz was forced to leave Chile and Pastor Becker was thrown out of his parish,  however he went on to establish a new parish of his own. Helmut Frenz continued his struggle for human rights as secretary-general of the German section of Amnesty International. Thousands of persecuted Chileans owe their lives to his efforts and to those of the churches. Forty years later, the two friends met again in Hamburg. We witnessed their reunion and intended to film the journey they planned to make back to Chile, but Helmut Frenz died before they could leave Germany. After burying his friend in Hamburg, Axel Becker set out alone to meet old comrades and retrace the footsteps of a courageous Christian who spoke out on behalf of victims of repression.
