Maria Regina Martyrum - A Place of Quiet Remembrance

The Berlin Church dedicated to Maria Regina Martyrum - Mary, Queen of Martyrs - was built to commemorate those who were incarcerated and murdered between 1933 and 1945 for their resistance to the inhumanity of the Nazi regime. It was consecrated in 1963. This unique memorial to the martyrs of that dark period of German history is a blend of unusual architecture and striking works of art: a Christian response to the former Plötzensee Prison, just a short distance away, where Hitler’s henchmen executed more than two-and-a-half thousand people, most of them political prisoners.
