A UN-backed hunger monitoring agency has declared famine in Gaza City. Friday's announcement by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification comes as Israeli forces are massing to take over the city. Israel has denied that starvation is taking place.

Over half a million people in Gaza are facing catastrophic hunger, according to a UN-backed report. Displaced residents describe months of starvation, limited aid and ongoing conflict.

As Israeli airstrikes intensify and access to food and water remains scarce, humanitarian organizations have warned the crisis will deepen unless fighting stops and aid flows resume.
