Fan Enthusiasm Spills Onto Pitch

June 20, 2005

The Confederations Cup is not only a warm-up for the eight teams competing, it is also a type of dry run for the World Cup 2006 organizing committee and security forces. Yet after eight matches, organizers must be burying their heads in their hands in embarrassment after two pitch invasions by overexcited fans. Although nobody came to harm and the perpetrators were whisked away quickly by guards, World Cup officials do not want to see such stunts next summer during the World Cup. The spectator who dashed onto the pitch to give German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann a hug said he had won a 500 euro bet with friends for the act. Now he has been banned from Cologne stadium. "This sort of thing is so difficult to stop," said Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira after another incident in the Mexico-Brazil match. "You see this everywhere around the world -- it won't be the last time."
