FIFA Wants 14,000 World Cup Volunteers
September 2, 2005World soccer's international governing body FIFA announced Friday that it is looking for 14,000 volunteers to help make sure the 2006 World Cup in Germany gets off without a hitch. In addition to helping fans find their seats, some volunteers will also travel with teams, work as interpreters during player interviews and driving VIPs in and around the 12 host cities. The FIFA organizing committee has already received about 40,000 applications from around the world, but still recommended anyone interested in taking part send in the online application as no personnel decisions have been made yet. The organizing committee will be drawing on experience gathered during the Confederations Cup when some 2,000 people volunteered during the summer's tournament and earned the personal thanks of German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who said their work "played an important part in the event's success."
