Project goal: Bring down number of old and worst polluting vehicles. Improve air quality
Measures taken: Create incentives for inhabitants to switch to greener cars, e.g. through cash-for-clunkers schemes
Project size: Some 40,000 trucks have been scrapped. It's part of a 7 million Euro program run by the International Climate Initiative

In the 1990s Mexico City was regarded as the most polluted mega-city in the world. Emissions from industry and the increase in motorized traffic made the air barely breathable. But much has changed since then. The government's "pro aire" program is aimed at making the metropolis' air cleaner and thus improve the quality of life for its inhabitants. Support for the scheme comes from the German development agency GIZ who advise the government on how to bring down the number of the worst polluting vehicles and how to develop modern public transport systems. And that is not all. Rooftop gardens springing up on top of houses across the city help provide green oases of fresh air.
