Stefan Mey/gnbDecember 20, 2013

Barely a week goes by without publication of a study that attempts to answer one burning question: how does the Internet affect the music business? The answer is not simple.

Experts calculate the relationship between file sharing and music sales, explore the image of digital music files and compare the willingness to pay for online streaming services. These studies often produce contradictory conclusions.

Professor Peter Tschmuck is unimpressed by most studies. Born in 1971, the trained economist teaches at the Institute for Cultural Management and Economics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He was promoted to the position of professor in 2003 with his paper "Creativity and Innovation in the Music Industry" and since then researches the relationship between music and money flows. He regularly discusses the international situation in the industry on his blog and in particular draws attention to two hot topics, namely the impact of illegal file shares and the actual importance of much-hyped streaming services.
