Fill the Tank Myself? No Thanks!

DW staff (sac)June 29, 2005

Women can't drive, women can't park, let alone change a tire. The fair sex may scoff at these stereotypes, but a new survey shows that as far as German women go, there may be a be a grain of truth to them.

The clichés about women and cars are endless -- and for women, at least, not necessarily funny.

But a German poll published Tuesday showed that many women do indeed have a difficult relationship to their automobiles.

The survey of 1,006 women, commissioned by the magazine Men's Health, found that 71 percent of those interviewed thought changing a tire was more than they could cope with.

Almost half of the women wouldn't even dare to change their car's oil on their own, the research institute Gewis said.

Some 30 percent of women said they shied away from driving through the car wash and a good third would rather leave it up to the men to stow large suitcases away in the car. The poll also found that every seventh female driver completely loses track of things due to the many switches in a car.

Last but not least: women apparently don't like getting their hands dirty. One in 50 women said they'd like to return to the good old days of full-service gas stations.
