Five North Koreans Escape to German School

Hoping to flee their country, a group of North Koreans on Tuesday morning sought refuge at the German school in the Chinese capital Beijing, according to officials at the German foreign ministry. While five people were later moved to the German embassy, a sixth person was asked to leave because he could not prove that he was a North Korean citizen. According to estimates, several thousand North Koreans have sought refuge in northeastern China. In the past, refugees who have entered diplomatic missions of foreign countries in Beijing have been allowed to travel to South Korea via third countries.
