Round-up

Borussia Dortmund swept past third division Magdeburg to sail into the third round of the German Cup and blow away concerns about a dip in form. Alexander Isak grabbed the headlines on his first start in German football, setting up the opener and scoring the second in a 5-0 victory. Mainz needed extra-time to see off the challenge of second division high-flyers Kiel. Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt disposed of fourth-tier Schweinfurt with ease and Ingolstadt came from behind to see off fellow Bundesliga 2 side Fürth.

There were also no real surprises in the early games as all the Bundesliga sides progressed. Borussia Mönchengladbach were made to work hard for their victory by a single goal in Düsseldorf. Schalke were cruising but had to withstand a late Wiesbaden rally while Leverkusen were pegged back in the sceond half by Union Berlin before running out comforatble winners in the end. Third division leaders Paderborn put in an impressive shift to beat Bochum of the second tier.

Re-live all the action as it happened

FULL TIME Mainz gather their last reserves of energy to crawl over the line against Kiel, who had their chances but just not enough in the end.

105'-- Kodro has had two golden opportunities to put the game to bed for Mainz. First he placed a free header wide, then blazed over when in acres of space.

100'-- GOAL! Kiel have had two big opportunities to take the lead in extra-time, but it is Mainz who have the edge. Daniel Brosinski places a free-kick into the top corner.

FULL TIME All the Bundesliga clubs are through, with the exception of Mainz, who go into extra-time against Kiel.

90'-- GOAL! Dortmund make it five in style! Quick passing, one-twos, backheels, the lot. Then Kagawa finds space to shoot and makes no mistake.

87'-- GOAL! Ingolstadt have killed this off now and how! Morales hammers an unstoppable drive from 25 yards into the top corner.

85'-- GOAL! Danny Blum with a cheeky finish to put Frankfurt 4-0 up. With the ball coming across, he looked as if he would control it, but dinked a first time chip with the outside of his boot while staring down the keeper.

82'-- GOAL! Ingolstadt have nicked it! Stefan Lex squeezes the ball home from a tight angle. Keeper Marius Funk will not be happy with his attempt to save that.

80'-- Marvin Matip, Inglostadt's captain and wearing a mask tonight, tries in vain to get on the end of a cross to make a breakthrough. Still deadlock in Fürth.

79'-- GOAL! Marc Bartra plants a thunderous header home from Kagawa's cross. Dortmund 4-0 up and in the next round.

77'-- Isak comes off to be replaced by Schürrle. What a night on his first start. Set up the first and scored the second.

77'-- Kiel almost take the lead. Aaron Seidel, on loan from Mainz gets a foot on a cross and nearly turns it home, but Zentner dives well to save. The keeper claims the corner and we are heading for extra time.

75'-- GOAL! Drexler equalizes from the spot.

75'-- PENALTY TO KIEL Zentner brings down Drexler as he looked to gobble up a rebound...

73'-- AND YARMALENKO SCORES Dortmund are home and dry now. Keeper got a hand to it, but just too far in the corner.

72'-- PENALTY TO DORTMUND Guerrerio's cross ruled to have been blocked by a hand...

Image: picture-alliance/dpa/H. Schmidt

67'-- GOAL! Mainz lead! Just as I'd written that, Öztunali works some space for himself and gets a cross over to Fischer who forces it home for his and Mainz's second.

65'-- If anyone is going to get a winner in Mainz, it is second division Kiel at this rate. Mainz have brought on Muto to provide more attacking impetus, and....

62'-- GOAL! Marius Wolf has added to his goal against Dortmund at the weekend to put Frankfurt 3-0 up.

61'-- Dortmund captain and Magdeburg native Marcel Schmelzer makes way for Raphael Guerrerio, the Portuguese European Champion who makes his comeback after a lengthy lay-off.

60-- Yarmalenko almost makes it three for Dortmund, but shoots wide from about 10 yards out on teh right-hand side. Dortmund are turning the screw now.

58-- GOAL! Sebastian Haller robs the Schweinfurt defender of the ball about 30 yards out, staggers on towards goal after brushing off the next defender and sidefooting home.

57'-- Just minutes before that goal, Maxim had a shot cleared off the line, which would have put Mainz 2-0 up. As it is, they are pegged back and on the ropes. The troubled start to Sandro Schwarz' reign looks set to get worse.

55'-- GOAL! Kiel are level! Schindler from the spot after Gbamin had brought him down on the edge of the area.

52'-- Huge chance for Frankfurt. Marco Russ rises high from a corner but his header is saved on the line, as is the rebound that he managhed to get in.

51'-- The Magdeburg pitch is barely visible after fans let off a series of flares. The home side try and slip behind the Dortmund defense unseen, but can't make the most of a rare counter.

47'-- GOAL! And Cohen finishes with ease. Ingolstadt equalise a minute after going behind.

47'-- GOAL! Fürth take the lead, but then go and concede a penalty straight away.

47'-- AND SCORE! GOAL TO DORTMUND And it's Alexander Isak!! He set the move going, collected a reteurn from Yarmalenko in the area and cooly slotted home.

46'-- We're off, and Magdeburg have a corner, which Bürki just about deals with and Dortmund go up the pitch...

HALF TIME And all the Bundesliga sides are doing what they were supposed to and lead against lower-league opposition.

41'-- GOAL Castro opens the scoring for Dortmund with his first touch after coming on for Dahoud. Half-volley from close range following a knock-down from Isak.

40'-- There's a break in play in Magdeburg as Dahoud receives treatment. Over in Mainz, Kiel are now creating some real chances. Adler had to be at his best to keep out Duksch and Schindler has gone close too.

35'-- Dortmund are being given no time to settle, no time to put their foot on the ball in the middle of the park. Possession is around 70 percent, but they are not able to find any space in useful areas.

32-- Having said that, Mainz keeper Rene Adler has to make a fantastic save to tip over Schindler's shot and prevent an equalizer

30-- Kiel have notched 28 goals in the second division so far, but have barely mustered a shot yet, despite plenty of attacking spells.

26-- Great effort for Schweinfurt, Paul unleashes a piledriver from distance but Hradecky at full stretch pushes it away.

22'-- Borussia Dortmund continue to press, Yarmalenko has a shot blocked before Dahoud sends a long-range effort whistling wide.

22'-- GOAL Mainz take the lead with a well-worked move and neat finish by Viktor Fischer.

Viktor Fischer celebratesImage: picture-alliance/dpa/T. Frey

20'-- Mainz are lacking a bit of concentration at the back. They have had more of the possession, but Kiel look more dangerous going forward. The visitors are going great guns in the second division and will fancy their chances against a wobbling Mainz side.

16'-- The all-Bavarian, all-Bundesliga 2 clash between Fürth and Ingolstadt is only slowly getting underway. Very much cat-and-mouse at the moment. Inglostadt have two corners in quick succession that don't even threaten to threaten.

13'-- GOAL! Frankfurt have taken the lead. Sebastien Haller is on the mark again. An attempted clearance bobbled up and Haller almost inadvertently headed it home.

12'-- Dortmund have started int eh only way though know how. Pressing high up the pitch. They've rotated heavily with Weigl, Götze, Pulisic and Aubameyang not even making the trip, but the system remains...

9'-- Marius Wolf goes down on the edge of the Schweinfurt box. He looked to have tripped, but Frankfurt have a dead-ball in a dangerous position. Willems blazes over though.

7'-- There is a raw, old-fashioned atmosphere at fourth-division Schweinfurt. The minnows have pledged not to park the bus against Frankfurt and have started tenaciously.

6'-- Yellow card fro Kiel's Drexler for upending Brosinski. Maxim ha a go from the free-kick, but straight into the wall.

3'-- HOW DID DORTMUND NOT SCORE??? Maximillian Philipp hit the post with the keeper nowhere, but then the Magdeburg stopper appeared out of thin air to pull of an incredible reaction save to stop Isak following up!

2'-- Corner for Dortmund. Isak almost got a snifter but the corner was wasted

1'-- We're underway around the grounds

20:35 The line-ups for the late games are in. Huuuuuge news in Magdeburg. Alexander Isak makes his first start for Dortmund in plae of Aubameyang. The young Swedish striker arrived with a big reputation but hasn't had chance to show it yet.

70-- Red card! Bochum defender Gyamerah is sent off for a seond booking. They have it all to do now.

67-- Leverkusen escape! Union Berlin hit the bar from a free-kick with Leno well beaten.

68'-- That has livened things up in the Bentalar Arena in Paderborn. A sold-out crowd senses blood. They want a penalty of their own, but the ref is having none of it.

67' MISSED Bastians hits it wide!

64-- PENALTY TO BOCHUM And how unnecessary. Herzenbruch raised his arms too high on the edge of the area to block a nowhere cross..PLenty of discussion continues, Paderborn are not going to let Bochum take this quickly...

59-- GOAL! Leverkusen are back in front. Lucas Alario scuffs a shot on the turn against the defender but reacts quickest to the rebound to loop a header over the stranded keeper.

Union Berlin fans are keen to make an impression...Image: picture-alliance/dpa/F. Gambarini

59-- Bochum have come up against a brick wall in Paderborn so far. Any tentative attacks are snuffed out quickly or just way too wayward.

53'-- GOAL! Schalke are three up, but it should never have stood. Burgstaller took aim, missed the ball completey, took an air-shot and whenn the ball bounced back up, he shoved the defender in the back and seemed to punch home. But it stood. And it is game over here.

51-- GOAL! Gladbach are in font. Torgan Hazard has put the visitors ahead. Hazard waltzed through on the left, cut inside and fired home. The keeper could have done better, if we're honest.

48-- GOAL! Those traveling fans are making a racket...Union have equalized. Out of nowhere. Leverkusen should be three up, Dennis Daube found a gap through a forest of legs and Berlin are level

Union equalizeImage: Imago/mika

48-- And the signs are promising. Tony Jantshke huffed and puffed his way down the right hand side but the cross wasn't accurate enough. To be fair, he probably ran out of steam.

46'-- We're underway once again. Still just waiting on a goal in Düseldorf...

HALF-TIME And there we have the first 45 minutes. More to come in a bit. Take the time to catch up on the German women's side beating Faroe Islands 11-0.

42-- Gladbach want a penalty after Traore goes to ground. Gräfe is having none of it.

40-- Gladbach are having great difficulty finding a way through Düsseldorf's defense. They are going to have to come up with something.

35-- GOAL! Julian Brandt finally gives Leverkusen the lead. No more than tehy deserve. And once again, Brandt shows his class. Dances past three defenders and then lifts it over the keeper with the outside of his boot while falling. What a player he is.

34-- Second division Düsseldorf have had the better chances against Gladbach so far. The home fans are ramping up the atmosphere

29-- GOAL! Schalke are 2-0 up. Guido Burgstaller doubles the favorites' lead. The Austrian went inside his man and chipped it over the onrushing keeper.

25-- GOAL! Schalke are in front at Wiesbaden. Franco di Santo gets a rare goal and looks very grateful, sinking to his nees and clasping his hands around his face!

20-- Leverkusen are slowly finding their feet. Mehmedi nearly put them ahead with a half-volley from a long through ball.

20-- Having said that....Gräfe gets into a debate with Düsseldorf coach Funkel about a foul by Traore that wasn't punished. In the meantime, Gladbach have had their first chance through Stindl.

15-- Raman sees yellow for Düsseldorf for an over-exuberant challenge on Matthias Ginter. Referee Manuel Gräfe let play on for about five minutes before producing the card. Nothing escapes his beady eye...

11-- A feisty start in Düsseldorf with Gladbach enjoying the lion's share of possession. The home side are happy to let them play in non-threatening areas whilst looking to hit the Bundesliga team on the break.

7-- Kick-off in the game between Leverkusen and Union Berlin was delayed for a while as to allow the masses of visiting fans into the stadium. Berlin to Leverkuen on a wet Tuesday eveing is a fair old trek. Union must sense an upset in the air!

7-- GOAL! Paderborn take the lead against Bochum! Sven Michel gives the underdogs, who aren't really underdogs on this showing, the lead!

Paderborn players celebrateImage: picture-alliance/dpa/F. Gentsch

6-- Schalke are dominating the early stages against third-tier Wiesbaden, but can't make the most of a corner.

5-- First chance for second division Bochum in their match at Paderborn, who lead the league below. Hemmerich cut insidde from the left but only sent a daiy-cutter towards Paderborn keeper Ratajczak.
