Belgium's Defense Minister Theo Francken said the incident seems to have been carried out by professionals who are trying to "sow panic."

Flights resumed Wednesday morning at Brussels Airport after drone sightings prompted delays and dozens of cancellations the previous evening.

But disruptions were still likely to continue through the morning, the airport in the Belgian capital said in an official statement.

"Following drone sightings on Tuesday evening, flight operations at Brussels Airport were suspended for safety reasons. This disruption has led to delays and some flight cancellations. As a consequence, flight operations might still be impacted on Wednesday morning," the announcement on the website said.

The Belgian national security council will convene Thursday morning to discuss the matter, according to De Staandard.

Tuesday's drone sightings are only the latest of several such sightings across Europe in recent months.

Brussels Airport closed Tuesday because of drone sightings

A drone was first seen near the Brussels Airport a little before 8 p.m. local time (1900 GMT) which led to a precautionary pause in flights. Many incoming planes were diverted and others were prevented from taking off.

The main airport in Brussels reopened after two hours, only to be closed again after more drones were spotted.

"There are no flights departing or arriving due to suspected drones," a spokesperson said at the time.

Over 400 people spent the night at the airport due to the disruptions, according to Belgian public broadcaster RTBF.

'This is destabilization'

The Liege Airport, mainly used as a cargo hub, also shut operations due to drone sightings, an airport spokesperson said.

The incident appeared to be carried out by professionals, Belgium's Defense Minister Theo Francken told the nation's public broadcaster on Tuesday night.

"They are trying to sow panic in Belgium," he said. "This is destabilization."

Increasing drone incidents

Just days before, Francken reported drone sightings over Belgium's Kleine Brogel airbase, which is used by NATO forces. Some local outlets reported more drone sightings over the airfield on Tuesday as well.

In September, Copenhagen Airport and Oslo Airport were closed for hours after drone sightings.

Meanwhile, there have also been suspected Russian drone incursions in Polish and Romanian airspaces in recent months.
