Flood rescue efforts intensify in Indonesia

Indonesia's president is under increasing pressure to declare a national emergency on the island of Sumatra, where floods and landslides have killed at least 836 people. DW joined an aid flight to an isolated area.

Northern Sumatra is facing severe floods and landslides that have cut off roads and collapsed supply chains, raising fears of food shortages. Aid is being delivered by helicopter and motorbike as authorities insist no area is completely inaccessible. Officials blame deforestation for worsening the disaster, while emergency crews warn it could take weeks to assess the full impact.
