Kohfeldt to stay on as Werder Bremen head coach

November 10, 2017

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Florian Kohfeldt will remain in his role as head coach until the winter break at least. Bremen have a number of critical fixtures coming up in their bid to avoid relegation.

Kohfeldt, who took over from Alexander Nouri on an interim basis following a run of 10 games without a win, becomes the third straight Bremen reserves coach to take charge of first-team affairs.

"We're convinced that Florian should carry on with his work until the winter break, at the very least," said sporting director Frank Baumann. "He's earned this chance because, in the last few days, his work he has met all of our positive expectations."

Baumann: "Florian was the benchmark"

In his first game in charge, Kohfeldt saw his side end up on the wrong side of a 2-1 result against Eintracht Frankfurt courtesy of Sebastian Haller's late winner. From now until the winter break, Bremen will welcome Hannover 96, VfB Stuttgart and 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the Weserstadion, whilst facing a trio of tricky road games with trips to Leipzig, Dortmund and Leverkusen upcoming.

Werder had been linked with a host of head coaches including Lucien Favre, Thomas Tuchel, and Bruno Labbadia, but once again decided to promote from within as they did with Nouri and Viktor Skripnik.

"Florian was the benchmark we were working with in our search for a new head coach," explained Baumann. "In our talks, no one impressed us as much as he did. Now it's about focusing fully on our remaining games until the winter break. Florian needs to guide them out of the relegation zone."
