Hidden underground for more than 10 million years, a spectacular skeleton of a prehistoric relation of modern elephants, found in southern Germany, is on display for the first time.

A remarkable fossil discovery in southern Germany is shedding light on a giant from prehistoric Europe.

Experts at a museum near Munich have carefully reconstructed the skeleton of a Deinotherium — an elephant-like species that lived over 10 million years ago.

Unearthed in 2023 by museum director Peter Kapustin and his sons, the find includes nearly complete skeletons that were hidden beneath layers of limestone. The extraordinary project took months of painstaking work and expert assembly to complete.
