France: Escape across the English Channel

Thousands of refugees have gathered in Calais, France, with the aim of crossing the English Channel. Many others have already made it to the UK.

About 7,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year. Funded by the UK, French police units try to stop refugees embarking on the journey.

Nanmoku has the oldest population of any village in Japan. Two thirds of its residents are over 65. A government program is helping young people move to Nanmoku, find work and feel at home there. That’s helping bring new life to the village.
