France: Ongoing Support for Nuclear Energy

As far as the French public is concerned, the nuclear power plant in Cattenom is a reliable energy supplier. But not far away, over the border in Germany, it's seen as a serious safety risk.

With its four reactors, Cattenom is one of the largest nuclear power plants in France. Its construction began in the late 1970s, and it has long been controversial in the neighboring countries of Germany and Luxembourg, with concerns centered on its safety. While Germany is rethinking its nuclear energy policy, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says that a nuclear phase-out is not in the cards in France.
