Taking to the field at the Olympic Stadium before the men's cup final, the two women’s teams contested a fierce and frenetic first half with Frankfurt taking early command of proceedings.

After Petra Wimbersky had tested Duisburg goalkeeper Kathrin Längert with only two minutes gone, Germany international Birgit Prinz broke through the defense a minute later only to be fouled. Frankfurt captain Renate Lingor scored from the spot to give Frankfurt a 1-0 lead with just three minutes on the clock.

Frankfurt soon settled and dictated much of the play as the first-half slowed to a more even pace with Duisburg probing the solid Frankfurt lines in search of an equalizer.

With Frankfurt mopping up every loose ball and smothering every attack, it looked as though the five-time winners would go into the break with their lead intact.

Duisburg captain Sonja Fuss had other ideas however and after good work on the left flank from Fatmire Bajramaj, Fuss got on the end of a whipped cross to poke in the equalizer on the stroke of half-time.

The second period was cagier and Frankfurt were soon the ones struggling to find a way through. Things got worse for them when Lingor had to be replaced on the hour after picking up an injury.

However, the best chance of a winner in regulation time came from Frankfurt's Kerstin Garefrekes whose header was cleared off the line with 13 minutes remaining.

After an extra 30 minutes of added time, the final went to penalties and Frankfurt's experience told. Successful spot-kicks from Prinz, Sandra Smisek, Louise Hansen and Wimbersky gave Frankfurt the advantage while Duisburg's Vanessa Martini and Patricia Harnebeck saw their efforts saved by Frankfurt custodian Ursula Holl.

"We hit very steady penalties, and Ursula saved two of theirs brilliantly. I think it was about time that we won the cup again," said Prinz.
