Continued turbulence on European stock markets has prompted four European countries to ban the practice of short-selling. The temporary ban is being imposed in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium. In short-sales, investors sell borrowed shares, hoping they'll decline in value before buying them back to pay off the loan. They then pocket the difference as profit.
