August 7, 2017

While on Sunday flights to and from Madeira were cancelled due to high winds, the situation in Austria and Italy has eased.

After the heavy rains and mudslides in Austria, clean-up operations are proceeding at top speed. The Grossarital Valley in the state of Salzburg is once again accessible.

The favorable weather forecast has also played into the hands of clean-up crews in Italy, but after days of wildfires and thunderstorms with torrential rain near Rome, the damage is great. A number of deaths have been reported.

The popular tourist island of Madeira was hit by winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour this past weekend, according to the national meteorlogical service. Dozens of flights to and from the Portuguese island had to be cancelled on Sunday. About 5500 passengers were affected. The winds are expected to die down around Monday afternoon.
