Passengers exposed to a deadly hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship have been evacuated to receive medical attention. DW's Nicole Ris and molecular biologist Kai Kupferschmidt have more.

A deceased Dutch ornithologist has been identified as "patient zero" of a deadly hantavirus outbreak onboard the cruise liner MV Hondius. Despite local protests, the vessel has docked in Tenerife, and all passengers have gone ashore, traveling on to medical institutions in their respective home countries.

To assuage public fear and anger, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus traveled to the Spanish Canary Islands, where he said that, despite the outbreak being linked to the Andes strain of the rodent-borne virus, which is capable of human-to-human transmission, there was no risk of a new pandemic.

We speak to DW correspondent Nicole Ris in Madrid and molecular biologist Kai Kupferschmidt for more details.
