At least two people have died in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Fung-wong lashes the country's northeastern islands with extreme winds and torrential rain. More than 1 million people have left vulnerable areas.

Super Typhoon Fung-wong has struck the Philippines, with winds of up to 230 kilometers per hour (140 mph) forcing more than 1 million people to evacuate. Power outages hit northeastern coastal areas, including Catanduanes and Luzon. The storm, called Uwan in the Philippines, spans nearly the entire archipelago. Meteorologists warn of widespread flooding.

Recovery efforts following the deadly Typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit the central Philippines only days ago, have been suspended.
