Future Now: Artificial Skin: lab-made specimens replace animal testing

The futuristic vision of a fully automated factory to produce artificial human skin is becoming reality. Heike Walles, professor of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine in Würzburg, has joined researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology to develop just such a process.

The 5000 thumbnail-sized skin models that could potentially be produced per month would eliminate the need for animal testing of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
