Bacteria in the large intestine break down the residue of our food. That produces gases, most of which is absorbed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream and eliminated via the lungs. But sometimes excess gas causes bloating and flatulence. Gulping your meals, eating certain foods, lack of exercise may contribute - as can stress.
