Genes and longevity - in humans and hydra

Hydra do not age but regenerate indefinitely. That is thanks to the FoxO gene. All animals have the gene, but it only helps to keep you alive and kicking if it is activated.

It turns it is indeed activated in very old humans as well. Biologists in Kiel are exploring the gene and its powers -- in man and polyp. It might lead to advances in medical care for the aged.
