Tomi Oladipo interviews Namatai Kwekweza
November 27, 2025

Namatai Kwekweza, a leading voice in Zimbabwe's social justice movement, has received the 2025 German Africa Award for her courage and work inspiring a new generation. "What keeps me going is solidarity," she told DW.

She's an extraordinary woman who has been fighting for civil rights in Zimbabwe — and has paid the price for it.

When she was just 18, Namatai Kwekweza founded a nationwide youth-leadership organisation, protesting economic hardship and the lack of democratic spaces.

This came at the price of later being thrown into prison, and tortured.

Kwekweza's organization WELEAD trains young leaders and pushes for their inclusion in political decision-making.

DW asked her what receiving the award meant to her.

Tomi Oladipo Tomi Oladipo is a British-born Nigerian journalist based in Berlin.
