Two scientists based in Botswana and in South Africa have been honored with the 2022 German Africa Prize. Sikhulile Moyo and Tulio de Oliveira played leading roles in the discovery of the coronavirus Omicron variant. Yet instead of praise and recognition, the scientists received threats from angry citizens and their home countries were slapped with travel bans.
