German Chancellor Angela Merkel says 2009 will be QUOTE a year of bad news for the economy, but believes things will be better at the turn of the decade. Merkel has been speaking before the parliament as it debates the federal budget for next year, which includes billions of euros in new debt, a move heavily criticized in some financial circles. But the Chancellor insists Germany is strong enough to weather the crisis without serious damage. +++SYN+++
