German chancellor Merkel joins French president Sarkozy in Paris to honour the fallen in World War One

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is taking part in ceremonies in France marking the end of World War I. It's the first time a German leader has attended Armistice Day events in Paris. Merkel joined French president Nicolas Sarkozy and other dignitaries for a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Some 17 million people died in the war -- most of them French, German and British soldiers.
