German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing criticism over recent comments about immigration. He spoke about "problems in the cityscape," which he said could be solved with mass deportations. His words sparked outrage from parts of the German public as well as politicians.

A spontaneous protest outside the CDU party's headquarters in the German capital, Berlin, has intensified the backlash against Chancellor Friedrich Merz's recent remarks linking urban safety to migration. Women, left-wing activists and opposition politicians joined the demonstration.

While Merz stands by his comments, critics — including coalition partners — have warned of division and populism. Social media voices, especially from young women, have countered Merz's claims, pointing to racism as the real issue shaping city life.
