For the first time - German combat troops are to be deployed in Afghanistan. The contingent of 200 soldiers will replace a Norwegian unit in the relatively quiet North. Nato and Washington have been pressuring Berlin to send a far larger contingent to the Afghan South - where military commanders are expecting an upsurge in Taliban activity in the Spring.
