Deutz is a German company that has been making engines for 160 years — for everything from boats to tractors. But now the manufacturer is eyeing the defense sector. In an in-depth interview, CEO Sebastian Schulte tells us why this pivot is good for the company, its workers and Germany. While he says that most Deutz employees applauded his decision and the firm's engineers are looking forward to the challenge, he admits that a few workers were uncomfortable with producing hardware for military purposes. While the engine maker's move is largely due to strong growth in the defense sector, Schulte says he also feels a responsibility to help "safeguard freedom and peace in Europe" and that Deutz is "not only prepared but actually also almost obliged to make a contribution."
