German Foreign Minister Fischer Visits Sri Lanka

January 11, 2005

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer concludes his tour of disaster-struck South Asia with a day-long visit to Sri Lanka where he is expected to discuss aid efforts with President Chandrika Kumaratunga, an official said. Fischer will not tour any areas affected by the December 26 tidal waves in Sri Lanka. "He will not visit tsunami-affected regions of Sri Lanka but discuss aid initiatives with the president and foreigm minister," the foreign ministry said. Fischer was in Jakarta early Monday where he said his government would "go further" than providing a debt moratorium to Indonesia if there was a need for it to help tsunami relief efforts. Germany is one of the largest providers of aid to disaster-affected countries, pledging €500 million ($654 million) ahead of the tsunami summit in Jakarta last week. Germany and other countries have also discussed cutting debt.
